"Dying nobly" means that he wants fame and admiration for a one-time act;dying. Living is much harder, it's arduous, ongoing, and tedious with rewards being hard-won. If someone is living humbly for their cause, they're doing it as an act of being true to themselves, their beliefs, their values - not for fame, glory, or public accolades. They see the long term, long lasting value in what they're doing, not the short-term, shallow, short-lasting rewards. See?
